China Mobile Zhejiang and Wind River successfully complete NovoNet Phase I testing

China Mobile Zhejiang Company recently completed a proof of concept (PoC) project with Wind River. According to the unified arrangement of China Mobile Communications Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "China Mobile"), in the China Mobile Zhejiang Company NovoNet project, Wind River Titanium Cloud, as the NFVI/VIM platform, successfully completed the first phase of testing together with other VNF and hardware vendors.

China Mobile, the world's largest mobile operator, has launched the China Mobile NovoNet strategy as a major engineering project to transform its network architecture, operations and services into the next generation network infrastructure.

Like many operators in the industry, China Mobile Zhejiang is also keen on innovation to inject vitality into development opportunities and operational efficiency, and the most promising direction is virtualization. They pay special attention to testing NFV technology to deploy new services more quickly and flexibly, and seize market windows to cope with competitive pressure. In addition, they are also interested in solutions that can update and replace dedicated hardware that has lasted for more than ten years.

China Mobile Zhejiang chose to work with Wind River for the NovoNet project for several reasons. Chief among them was Wind River’s extensive experience working with other China Mobile teams on implementations, its solid and positive reputation across the partner ecosystem, and the openness of Wind River’s Titanium Cloud NFV infrastructure (NFVI) platform. Of particular importance to China Mobile Zhejiang’s NovoNet project was that Wind River provided an independent and open NFVI platform that avoided vendor lock-in and met China Mobile’s requirements for three-layer decoupling (VNF, virtualization, and hardware layers).

China Mobile Zhejiang worked closely with Wind River to create a test lab that includes a simulated network. The Wind River Titanium Cloud platform was deployed in multiple resource pools, including a 16-node edge TiC and a 50-node core TiC. The test lab requires the NFVI platform to have high availability, high stability, and carrier-grade reliability, while also providing open interfaces and being fully compatible with other vendors' open standard-based technologies.

The project leader of Zhejiang NovoNet of China Mobile said, "We are continuously committed to network transformation and the pursuit of better customer service, and normal service and stable operation are always the most critical indicators. Wind River Titanium Cloud platform provides carrier-grade reliability, high performance and flexibility, and Wind River platform has passed various NFVI tests in China Mobile's field laboratory. We strongly agree with the benefits of pre-verification of the partner ecosystem, which is of great help to the rapid deployment and integration of the system, and can save a lot of time for system verification.

“Together with China Mobile Zhejiang, we are advancing NFV solutions that will dramatically improve business agility, improve customer service, increase operational efficiency, and significantly reduce costs,” said Charlie Ashton, senior director of business development for Wind River Network Solutions. “Wind River Titanium Cloud delivers carrier-grade network virtualization capabilities to help service providers achieve new levels of flexibility, scalability, and operational and energy efficiency.”

We look forward to more fruitful results from our cooperation with China Mobile Zhejiang Company on the NovoNet project.
