Preparing for 5G: The three major operators are busy withdrawing 2G from the network

Domestic operators will launch 5G networks in 2020, but as of now, 4G networks have been developed very thoroughly.

According to the data released by the three major operators last year, in 2017, the total number of 4G users of China Telecom, China Mobile and China Unicom reached 182 million, 650 million and 175 million respectively. After the rapid increase in users, 4G development entered a stable period.

According to the 21st Century Business Herald, migrating 2G users to 4G as soon as possible and promoting the withdrawal of 2G networks are the key tasks of the three major operators this year.

Interestingly, China Unicom has previously stated in its financial report that it will accelerate the migration of 2G to 4G, effectively utilize resources, and promote the reduction of frequency and capacity of 2G\3G networks, while China Telecom and China Mobile are also preparing for the same thing.

In fact, more than 20 operators in countries and regions including Japan, South Korea, the United States, and Singapore have officially shut down their 2G networks and completed user migration. After the 2G network is withdrawn, the high-quality frequency bands originally used for 2G can be reused, and the 2G spectrum can be used for the construction of 4G networks and NB-IoT networks, which can achieve lower construction costs.
