Between the third quarter of 2019 and the third quarter of 2020, the world added 225 million 5G users, a figure that took four years to achieve for 4G. As of December 2020, there were 229 million 5G users worldwide, a staggering 66% increase from the previous quarter. It is expected that by the end of 2020, the number of 5G users worldwide will reach 236 million.

“As people shift to remote work, the availability of fast, low-latency 5G networks is critical,” said Chris Pearson, president of 5G Americas. “This historic recalibration clearly demonstrates the need for constant mobile connectivity as social and physical distancing requirements have transformed the way we work, live and play.”

According to TeleGeography, 29 new 5G networks were added in the third quarter of 2020, bringing the total number of 5G commercial networks worldwide to 143, a number that is expected to reach 180 by the end of 2020.

In addition, the growing popularity of 5G devices has also brought benefits to customers and the industry. The Global Mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) pointed out that there are currently 519 5G devices announced, of which 303 were available on the market by the end of November 2020.

5G has the characteristics of high speed, large capacity, and low latency, which has enabled remote services, smart homes, virtual reality, augmented reality and other fields to develop faster under the influence of 5G technology and can bring better business experience to users.
