GSMA releases world's first new 5G network guidelines

GMSA and China Telecom have released new guidelines for 5G networks to assist mobile operators looking to launch 5G standalone networks. The document contains recommendations on technology, spectrum and regulatory best practices and was developed in conjunction with many of the current leaders in the 5G industry.

Alex Sinclair, Chief Technology Officer of the GSMA, said: “Deploying networks using the 5G standalone core will enable businesses and governments to benefit from high throughput, ultra-low latency and the Internet of Things, thereby increasing productivity and enhancing services to their customers.”

Liu Guiqing, executive vice president of China Telecom, added: “5G Standalone Option 2 can meet more stringent requirements and provide the best differentiated solutions, thereby benefiting more enterprises and unlocking the potential of many services.”

The new guidelines were released during GSMA Thrive China, the first in a planned series of online events at the GSMA Thrive Network. The GSMA believes that 5G SA technology is needed to realize the full potential of 5G and that it will ultimately help support many key healthcare, education and smart city applications.

The news is consistent with the GSMA’s 5G advocacy efforts, with the organization previously working with the O-RAN Alliance to encourage the adoption of 5G and the development of new products with 5G capabilities.
