Japanese media disclosed: The United States will set up a 5G multilateral fund to contain China

According to a report by Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun on February 1, the newspaper's reporter recently learned that the US government will set up a multilateral fund to strengthen 5G technology research and development and equipment supply networks. In addition to the "Five Eyes Alliance" countries, the fund also plans to absorb Japan to participate. In order to prevent the popularization of Chinese equipment, the US seems to be interested in forming an alliance with some closely related countries against China to seize the leading position in the field of 5G research and development.

According to reports, the United States has included the establishment of a "Multilateral Communications Security Fund" in the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act passed in early January. The relevant clauses mention the purpose of establishing the fund, including the development of so-called "secure and trusted" technologies, strengthening equipment supply networks, and strengthening the use of products from trusted manufacturers. The bill states that funds will be used flexibly to ensure the participation of trusted overseas partners such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

The report said that although the specific size of the fund will be finalized in the future, the bill previously submitted to Congress proposed that the total amount of the fund will reach US$500 million, striving to accelerate the adoption of so-called "secure and trusted" communication equipment worldwide in the next 10 years and encourage multilateral participation.

The Democratic senator Mark Warner, who led the idea, told the Yomiuri Shimbun: "It is necessary for the United States to work closely with its allies on a number of technologies, including 5G. Japan is a leader in wireless communications technology and will be one of the most important partners in this effort."

The report said that the 5G communication network built by the United States for the purpose of countering China cannot be separated from the assistance of Japan, which has strong technical strength. Once the above-mentioned fund project is officially launched, it will also promote the popularization of Japanese manufacturers' technologies and products.
