When 5G network solves the fee issue, will your phone still use WiFi?

Recently, British media reported that Ofcom's chief technical officer stressed that as mobile networks become more and more powerful, Wi-Fi is being marginalized. According to statistics from well-known research institutions, the average speed of mobile networks in many countries and regions has exceeded the speed of Wi-Fi connections.

In fact, this situation has already existed in China, and will become more obvious as 5G networks become more popular. The current 5G commercialization schedules of the three major domestic operators are as follows:

  • China Unicom: Plans to realize 5G trial commercialization in 2019 and formal commercialization in 2020.
  • China Telecom: 5G trial commercialization will be realized in 2019, and large-scale commercialization in key cities in 2020.
  • China Mobile: 5G pre-commercialization will be realized in 2019 and official commercialization will be carried out in 2020.

It can be seen that around 2020, that is, the year after next, the three major domestic operators will almost be able to achieve large-scale commercial use of 5G networks. It can be said that 5G networks are getting closer and closer to us, and the era of higher-speed mobile networks is about to come.

Although the current 4G network speed is fast enough, people still prefer WiFi in their daily use habits. The reason is that apart from the needs of public places and smart homes, people are not used to using mobile data, and the main reason for choosing WiFi is the cost issue.

In fact, with the development of the times, under the overall trend of mobile Internet, the disadvantages of WiFI have become more and more obvious: the first is its convenience. The current fixed nature of WiFi networks can hardly meet the needs of today's mobile clients; secondly, if there are too many devices connected to the same WiFi, the network speed it provides will inevitably be affected, and even network freezes may occur (this situation is more obvious in major universities); the last is that even if you have a high-speed broadband network, it is difficult for you to perform at its expected level by relying on a general router.

Just imagine, if with the advent of the 5G network era, domestic operators have solved the problem of network charges for us, then will you still be accustomed to connecting to WiFI when using your mobile phone?
