6GHz band officially approved, Wi-Fi 6E to debut this year: 2.5 times faster

Since the Wi-Fi frequency band was first vacated in 1989, the US FCC (Federal Communications Commission) has increased the spectrum resources released for routing and IoT devices by four times, but this is still far from enough.

This week, the FCC voted to approve a proposal to open the 6GHz band, releasing up to 1200MHz of frequency band resources at one time, from 5.925GHz to 7.125GHz, for unlicensed use (indoor devices are limited to low-power routers, smart hardware, etc., and outdoor devices are limited to the same power level in the 850MHz band).

It is reported that 6GHz will mainly support the Wi-Fi 6E standard, which will be 2.5 times faster than the existing standard . At the same time, the maximum bandwidth of Wi-Fi 6E is still 160MHz, but there are more open channels. In Wi-Fi 7, the bandwidth will be upgraded to 320MHz.

It is believed that wireless VR/AR devices will be the first to enjoy the huge dividends of the 6GHz band, after all, they need high bandwidth in a short range. However, the wall penetration performance of 6GHz is obviously not better than 5GHz, let alone 2.4GHz, and more supporting technology optimization is still needed.

In addition, in order to avoid interference of outdoor 6GHz with point-to-point backhaul of cellular networks, the FCC stated that outdoor devices will follow the AFC (automatic frequency coordination system) to avoid problems. This system is jointly supported and developed by Apple, Google, Microsoft, Intel, and Qualcomm.
