Expert: It is impossible for the United States to bypass 5G and develop 6G

On September 21, at the opening event of Sina 5G Open Day "Refresh Your Life" jointly hosted by Sina Technology and Sina 5G, Lv Tingjie, professor at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications and executive director of the International Telecommunication Society (ITS), said in his speech that terahertz and space-to-air Internet are not the real development direction of 6G. What 6G aims to solve is ubiquitous computing. It is impossible for Americans to bypass 5G to develop 6G.

Lu Tingjie said that the terahertz emphasized by the United States would be a solution to the technical problems that need to be considered for 6G, but it should not be the main solution for 6G.

In his opinion, 6G must solve the pain points of 5G. The application of 5G has not yet come out, and it may even take 5 to 7 years to emerge on a large scale. Therefore, whether it is necessary to use higher frequency bands such as terahertz and higher costs to solve the network speed problem is still unknown.

The biggest application and use of 6G is to solve the pain points of 5G, and the biggest pain point of 5G is definitely not the bandwidth issue.

In addition, there are also views that space-air Internet is 6G, but Lv Tingjie disagrees. Satellite networking and ground base station networking cannot be compared in terms of latency, so space-air Internet is definitely not the development direction of 6G, but it will become a supplement to network coverage, such as services that do not have such strict latency requirements.

"The United States' definition that terahertz is 6G and space-to-air Internet is 6G is absolutely wrong. It is impossible for Americans to bypass 5G to develop 6G," he said.

Lv Tingjie believes that based on the pain points of 5G networks, future networks will have five major characteristics:

First , we need to move from ubiquitous connectivity to ubiquitous computing. For example, cameras, cars, and even manhole covers have computing capabilities.

Second , a large number of machines, people, and objects are connected. They are all heterogeneous networks. How to interconnect, interoperate, and shake hands in a friendly manner between networks will become the main problem.

Third , the collaboration between humans and machines, and the integration of humans and the Internet. Humans are no longer external to the Internet, but have become internal variables of the Internet, which will inspire many applications.

Fourth , it is secure and reliable. It will inevitably become an endogenous technology that must be considered in the evolution of communication technology from 5G to 6G.

Fifth , network neutrality. China Telecom and China Unicom have already jointly built and shared 5G, and the future network will be network neutral, with everyone having equal access to the same network and running their business.

In his summary, Lu Tingjie emphasized that the communications industry is developing from selling circuits in the past, then selling bandwidth, and will eventually sell computing power. We will face a huge revolution. The arrival of 5G will change society in this way. It will further digitize society, and the trend is greater than the advantage.

No matter how strong a country or a company is today, if you don’t follow this trend, you may not be able to grasp this direction at all.
