Open source software enthusiast Eric S Raymond has begun to take a hard look at Microsoft's practices, including its upcoming release of the Edge browser for Linux. Raymond thought that the personal computer market business was declining and Microsoft's real cash cow was the Azure business. He also revealed that Azure had more machines running Linux than Windows. Raymond boldly proposed that from the cold-blooded perspective of maximizing profits, Microsoft would eventually abandon the development of Windows. Of course, for transitional considerations, Windows might be downgraded to a subsystem of Linux. Raymond also praised Proton, an emulation software that can run Steam games for Windows on Linux, saying, "It's not perfect now, but it's coming." In other words, Raymond believes that Linux will ultimately win the desktop victory. He even concluded that "Microsoft is not ending Windows, but choosing Linux to take over it." |
