Omdia: Global 5G subscriptions doubled in the second quarter of 2020

According to the latest report data provided to GSA by market research firm Omdia, the number of global LTE users has reached 5.55 billion as of the second quarter of 2020. Among them, nearly 800 million LTE users have increased in the past 12 months.

Currently, LTE users account for 60.4% of the total number of mobile users worldwide. In addition, the number of 5G users doubled in the second quarter of 2020. The number of 5G smartphone users worldwide reached at least 137.7 million, accounting for 1.5% of the overall global mobile market.

Omdia predicts that by the end of 2025, the number of mobile users worldwide will be close to 10.3 billion.

The LTE technology market share is expected to peak at the end of 2021 (63.3%), and the number of users is expected to peak at the end of 2022 (6.07 billion users).

Starting in 2023, the LTE market is expected to begin a slow decline as users migrate to 5G.

From the end of 2020 to the end of 2025, the GSM user market share will drop from 15.1% to 5.6%, and the WCDMA user market share will drop from 19.4% to 11.3%.

By the end of 2025, 5G will account for nearly 30% of the global mobile market (3.03 billion users), while LTE will still account for 53.5% of global mobile users.

The rapid growth of 5G networks is not only a new generation of connectivity options for smartphones, but also a major option for the Internet of Things. It is certain that we will see even faster growth of 5G in the coming years when more similar products are available.
