According to a new research report released by Strategy Analytics, by 2020, global 5G smartphone sales will surge 1,300% to a record 250 million units. This number is achieved due to the rapid deployment of 5G networks and the strong promotion of mobile phone manufacturers such as Apple, Samsung, and Huawei. The development of 5G mobile phones and the increase in ownership have indeed opened up a new growth path for the smartphone market, but for users, the increase in quantity may not necessarily generate corresponding actual value.
At present, smartphones are almost fully mature in terms of design, function, price, etc., and innovation has reached a certain bottleneck. It is not easy to make a big breakthrough. Whether it is a 4G phone or a 5G phone, at a similar price, there is no fundamental difference in appearance, performance, etc., and some 5G phones have made very small changes, which is not very meaningful from a practical point of view. Moreover, as the number of 5G mobile phones has increased dramatically, operators have begun to vigorously promote 5G packages, trying to gain an advantage in the battle for 5G users and win the future market. However, even in countries such as China and South Korea where 5G base station construction is relatively fast, the coverage and user experience of 5G networks are still limited. Some 5G users have reported that 5G signals are still not covered in many places, and even in covered areas, they are not stable enough. Even so, in order to promote 5G packages and take related interests into consideration, some operators even apply for 5G packages for some 4G mobile phone users in various ways, making them so-called "5G users" and increasing their own 5G user numbers. Moreover, in order to get users to choose 5G packages when applying for packages, some operators have removed 4G packages from online channels, severely compressing users' right to make their own choices. The development of 5G is an inevitable trend and has inestimable economic, technological and social value. However, the 5G network is still in its initial construction stage and has a lot of room for improvement in terms of coverage, network stability, package prices, market system and other aspects. It has not yet achieved the ability to be popularized on a large scale in the true sense. Therefore, it is important not to rush into promotion or even take actions that are "unfriendly" to users.
