Dell'Oro: Chinese service providers account for a large share of 5G core network deployment

Since the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology officially issued 5G licenses to four basic telecommunications operators in June last year, the industry, capital market, and consumers have all been looking forward to 5G networks, and my country's 5G construction has entered the process of large-scale deployment.

According to the latest report released by market research firm Dell'Oro Group, Chinese service providers currently account for the largest share of 5G core network deployment, and they are increasing the deployment speed to more than 35% every quarter.

"Revenues in the 5G Core market (5GC) were once again unexpectedly strong," said David Bolan, research director at Dell'Oro Group. "Huawei and ZTE became the number one and number two 5GC suppliers in the third quarter of 2020, becoming the dominant 5GC suppliers to Chinese service providers."

"We are seeing industry-wide focus on private networks and multi-access edge computing in the enterprise, coupled with accelerated 5G core deployments, we expect a very strong fourth quarter in 2020 and 2021," said David Bolan.

As the core part of the mobile communication network, the core network plays a connecting role and is mainly responsible for handling terminal users' mobility management, session management and data transmission (core functions).

From 2G to 5G, the core network has been continuously upgraded. The core network can achieve the coordination of 4G and 5G networks through interoperability. In the initial stage, it can meet the needs of eMBB scenarios. With the continuous improvement of technology, the core network can also support the needs of mMTC and URLLC scenarios.
