Talk about my operating system and daily application software

operating system

Manjaro is a distribution based on Archlinux.

Why choose it

I used Arch at first, but the updates were too fast, and I didn’t have enough time to troubleshoot problems caused by the updates while working, so I later switched to Manjaro, which has relatively stable updates.

Chat Tools

There are many native chat tools nowadays, but the most important thing about chat tools is to have someone to chat with! QQ, WeChat, and DingTalk are probably the most commonly used in China, but unfortunately the native support is not very good, so we can only rely on wine. Of course, some people use the web version to make some third-party WeChat and DingTalk clients, but they still can't compare with the native ones.

If you want to use wine, you can install net.winegame.client, which is a quick installation that saves you the trouble.

Franz is a messaging app that combines chat and messaging services into one app. Franz currently supports Slack, WhatsApp, WeChat, Facebook Messenger, Telegram, Google Hangouts, GroupMe, Skype and many more.

Browser

The browser is definitely an indispensable application in work. There are many browsers in Linux: Google Chrome, Chromium, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Vivaldi, etc. Pick a convenient one, usually Google Chrome, Chromium, Firefox in turn.

Video Player

Nowadays, many people watch videos online, so there is basically no need to install any player, just a browser is enough. Generally, it is enough to use the one that comes with the desktop environment, of course, there are many powerful ones, such as: smplayer, vlc, mpv.

If you want to listen to music, you can use NetEase Cloud Music, which has a Linux version; QQ Music also has one.

Input Method

This is fcitx5. No matter what ibus is like, I will use fcitx5. Compared with fcitx4, the experience is much better, and the supported plug-in content is also very rich. After installing the Chinese plug-in, you can also directly import Sogou's word library. Nice!

Terminal zsh

I'm used to zsh and can't go back to bash (I only use it on servers)

Works with Powerlevel10k and oh-my-zsh, very nice!

Development Tools

VScode is indispensable for writing shell, python, Go, html, etc.! I have used Sublime Text, atom, etc. before, but I still feel that VScode is convenient.

MySQL client: dbeaver-ce, it is very easy to use.

Note-taking tools

I am currently mainly using joplin. I used cherrytree before, just to make writing MarkDown more comfortable, so I switched to joplin and synchronized it with Nut Cloud.

Remote connection tools

You can directly use the ssh command to connect to perform remote operations on the terminal, but it is not very elegant. Of course, it would be better to have a GUI tool.

remmina is a remote tool that supports multiple protocols, including RDP, VNC, SPICE, NX, XDMCP, and SSH.

sftp/ftp tool: filezilla

Virtual Machines

VirtualBox is very powerful and has good support on Linux.

kvm +libvirt+ Qmue + virt-manager, kvm also has a lot of high-tech things.

Summarize

There is absolutely no problem using Linux for office and daily use, but I will still prepare a virtual machine to install Windows, and generally not open it unless necessary.
