South Korea's three major operators launch service to convert paper documents into text messages

SK Telecom, Korea Telecom and LG Uplus have teamed up on a green initiative to launch a service that converts paper documents such as bills into text messages (SMS), Mobile World Live reported.

The three companies said the authorized notification SMS service includes MMS and converged communications (RCS) content and provides the same legal status as registered mail.

Operators hope to contribute to environmental protection by reducing the amount of paper documents mailed and improving their environmental, social and governance (ESG) value.

Customers must confirm their identity to access services, including viewing electronic notices. The system uses existing text messaging capabilities, does not require a separate application, and does not allow the institution sending the document to obtain the recipient's phone number.

These operators jointly operate a call distribution system to securely deliver certified electronic documents to customers.
