Broadband speed increase is in earnest: starting from 100M in big cities!

The government's plan to increase speed and reduce fees for operators launched in 2016 is still criticized by users for being more noise than action. This situation will be fundamentally improved in the new round of information infrastructure construction.

The Chinese government website officially released the "Three-Year Action Plan for the Construction of Major Information Infrastructure Projects", which was formulated and issued by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. It proposed many goals for the national network information construction in the next few years.

The details are summarized as follows:

  1. By 2018, 90,000 kilometers of new trunk optical cables and 200 million new fiber-to-the-home ports will be added, optical network coverage will be achieved in urban areas, and access service capabilities of more than 1,000 megabits per second will be provided. Household broadband users in large and medium-sized cities will have flexible options of more than 100 megabits per second, and the proportion of administrative villages with fiber optic access will be increased from 75% to 90%.
  2. By 2018, 2 million new 4G base stations will be added, achieving full and deep 4G network coverage in towns and densely populated administrative villages, and the penetration rate of mobile broadband users will exceed 75%.
  3. By 2018, the reach and bandwidth capacity of my country's international land and sea cables had increased significantly; 40 new overseas POP points were added, bringing the total number to 120.
  4. By 2018, a new data center structure with advanced technology, reasonable structure, moderate scale, and green and intensive operation will be initially formed; the CDN network will be extended to all prefecture-level cities; and Internet applications will widely support the IPv6 protocol.
